About the Academies:
 

Academy students learn through the lens of a career or academic theme in a highly personalized learning community. Students are exposed to career opportunities, industry skills and potential employers through classroom speakers, site visits, job shadowing and internships. Academy students are offered a rigorous curriculum, life skills and practical work experience. The five groups of study include:

 

  • Arts

  • Media & Communications

  • Business, Marketing & Information Technology

  • Engineering, Manufacturing & Industrial Technology

  • Health & Public Services

  • Hospitality & Tourism

Academy Process:
 

All Academy students entering the ninth grade attend Freshman Academy. Sophomore through senior year each student selects an Academy that best fits interests and goals.

 

Teachers design engaging projects that go beyond traditional class work. Students have the opportunity to job shadow, intern and complete class projects in the community. Academy students are offered relevant, hands-on learning, follow a career-path early in high school. They have access to valuable business relationships and higher performing students have access to AP classes.

Academies Today:

 

  • The Academies of Nashville have receive national attention, with two recent visits from the White House. On April 1, 2014, FORD named the Academies the ‘model’ program.

 

  • Nine Metro high school academies have received the national model designation from the National Career Academy Coalition.

 

  • McGavock and Hillwood high schools  have “wall-to-wall” model academies.

 

  • Cane Ridge High School’s Academy of Architecture and Construction and Overton High School’s Academy of Engineering have received model academy designation.

 

  • Glencliff and Antioch high schools have nationally-certified academies.

 

  • The Academies are yielding positive results for the students.

 

  • Students are more engaged.

 

  • Students have a better understanding of course material.

 

  • Currently partner with over 140 area businesses.
